How to make a pie crust

For convenience, you can always buy ready made pie crust from the supermarket. I do use it sometimes. However, I find that some ready made pie crusts are too thin to hold the filling. Hence, I will try to make my own pie crust. Normally, I will double the portion to make extra pie crust, wrap it with plastic wrap and keep in freezer. It is advisable to use it within one week.

Ingredients for a 9 inch pie crust:
  • 1 1/4 cup of all-purpose/ plain flour
  • 1/2 cup (4 ounces) unsalted butter, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
  • 1/2 tsp brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 to 3 Tbsp ice water
Preparation:
  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar and salt with a spatula.
  2. Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly.
  3. Slowly add ice water 1 Tbsp at a time until the dough can hold together.
  4. On a clean surface, knead the dough to form a ball shape.
  5. Wrap in plastic and chill for at least 4 hours before using.
  6. Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface when ready to use.
